Default Internal or Puck antenna on Lowrance gps/fishfinder units??

Was wondering which is best? Are the newer internal units just as good? I have a fish & ski, so the signal would have to make it through the windshield. I'd prefer to go internal just to not have to mount a puck anywhere. Been looking at that that new HD-5. Looks like a nice unit.

The new HD-5 is a better internal receiver configuration. The receiver is in the display. They suggest you not flush mount the older internal reveiver models. A properly installed external receiver will be more reliable but if you need to go internal get the HDS. The 5's are going out right now.

I have both an internal and external on my boat. I run it that way, so if either antena fails, I can run the other as a back up, as for reception, it is really close from the external to the internal, but I will lose waas a little more often on the internal.

I have had multiple failures with the external antena, a couple at the worst time, day before Stren, twice. So I make sure I have a spare available.
