Default NEW D&M Gar Swim Jig

“The Gar” A Super Frenzy Swim Jig

Here at D&M Custom Baits we are always trying to improve on our tackle line and our swim jigs are no exception. We have now developed a new line of swim jigs exclusively made for the shallow water. With all the dominate weed growth we have in most of our waterways, it was about time we made a swim jig for fishing in, through and around this vegetation. Although the Gar is equally suited for swimming over downed logs or through trees.

The swim jig technique has been around for many years and swim jigs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, variations. The swim jig versatility has BIG bass appeal that can’t be overlooked in any lake, reservoir or river system.

Swimming a jig through a jungle of grass or tulles can really get you some quality fish. It is a very special technique, and requires a special type of jig. It needs a strong hook that will come through the cover without getting hung up and should be able to be fished day or night. This requires a few special features. Not only does it need great swimming action, but also equally important it should have that killer vibration that just drives fish wild.

The D&M Gar is a swim jig that has a unique shaped head and line tie with a blade that imparts an irresistible swimming action to a wide range of trailers. The Gar is also built around stout extended long shank 5/0 Gamakatsu hook and large keeper. It features a unique head design with 3-D eyes, magnum long tail skirts and is available in a wide variety of colors to match popular baitfish.

The new head design in the Gar has several benefits that will increase your hookups; The angled head and line tie allows the blade to hit each side of the attachment eye, giving greater vibration than anything we have made to date. The blade will also lay flat against the jig head and rests behind the attachment eye. There is no hook eye that will open up while pulling your jig free if snagged up.

Fishing the D&M Gar is easy; Instead of letting the jig sink to the bottom and depending on the depth your trying to reach, start your retrieve after the jig hits the water. In most cases your retrieve will be much like a spinnerbait, just below the surface or just above whatever grass/vegetation you might be targeting.

Setting the hook is usually just a matter of a quick crank set. This long shank 5/0 Gamakatsu hook sets back, giving you a bigger bite. But if you are one that really likes to rear back on your hook sets, the blade will hesitate for a split second and lock onto the attachment eye. This will stop your blade from flipping up and giving the fish a chance to come unhooked.

The Gar is not just an alternative to spinner baits but the extreme vibration seems to attract larger fish and it’s primarily mimicking a fleeing Crawdad or Bait fish. A swim jig with a long tail trailer is a bulky lure that creates a lot of water movement and vibration. We recommend a swim bait style trailer in open water; (Paddle-Tail, Grass Thumper) and a crawdad style trailer (check out our Craws) for use around tules, bullrush, cattails, grass/vegetation and matts.

Anglers have scores of places to fish the Gar; Lay downs, rip rap, retaining walls, boat docks or other aquatic vegetation are all prime locations to use a swim jig. Simply cast out or pitch past the intended target, start reeling, keeping the swim jig in the strike zone. It’s important to NOT stop reeling after hitting an object, the swim jig will have a tendency to deflect, bounce off or roll over the obstruction. In fact, that is when most strikes happen.

The Gar can to be fished at any retrieve speed; A slow steady retrieve will give you great pulsating action, rippin technique will give you that special vibration used in the spring, can really entice the big females. It can also be slow rolled and bumped along bottom cover, counted down and retrieved through suspended bass, dropped vertically through treetops, and even burned near the surface.

The Gar’s Bait keeper is standard as well as heavy long shank Gamakatsu Hook and is available in 1/2 oz. lead Head & 3/8oz. made of “Tin”.

Our Magnum Long Tail Skirts will give off the most action. There is no need for hand tied skirts, these solid rubber cores will last for years. Standard skirts will allow you to use any type of trailer you want.

Powder Paint, gives you the longest lasting paint. Our custom plated blades, will be standard. White, Gold, Black Nickel, and Chrome.

Are you ready to take your jig swimming to the extreme level!? The Gar will change the way you think about vibrating jigs.

Here are just a couple of the early arrivals in 1/2oz. There will be a 3/8oz version as well. Check back often for a full gallery of all the colors, rigging suggestions and an on the water video!
