BETHEL ISLAND, Ca – Future Pro Tour anglers will converge in mass at Russo’s Marina this coming Saturday as they prepare in earnest, for the first in a series of events to be held on the massive California delta.
And it is a good bet that those teams with even the slightest hopes of competing in the prestigious 2009 Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour Classic championship, to be held in just three short months, will be fully aware that now is not the time to employ a conservative approach to fishing in this first event dubbed “Rollin on the River”.
“I been fishing this waterway for a lot of years and know it pretty well”, noted FPT angler Harvey Pulliam who considers the California Delta his home waters. But one thing I have learned over the years of fishing it is that you should NEVER underestimate its ability to quickly take you from a hero to a zero”, he said candidly. On the delta nothing is for certain…and you just have to go out there, follow your instincts, and commit yourself to fishing hard all day long”.
And as warm but stable conditions are forecast for the Saturday (northern region) and Sunday (central region) events, most members of the Future Pro Tour’s pro-support staff such as Ranger pro Ken Mah concur with a more aggressive fishing strategy. “Go for the big bites early, and try to get the big fish – those that feed primarily in the early morning hours, to go for your top water offerings before sun is fully up as you will need some good “anchor” fish to bring a decent limit to the scales”.
One variable that all competitors must deal with is the tidal factor, as FPT venues thus far, have been held on various lakes throughout northern and central California, which outside of the falling water conditions brought on by the various regulating water resource agencies, basically fish the same from day to day.
But not so with the California delta.
This maze of sloughs and levies meander throughout the San Joaquin Valley producing over 1000 miles of shoreline, with tides that undulate multiple times within a 24 hour period creating a challenge that will test the resolve of even the best of anglers.
But Future Pro Tour anglers are never left without a way to receive the help they need in their quests to become true students of the game. And in keeping with its manta: “A Great Place to Learn”, the Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour will host its traditional – and optional, pre-registration seminar/clinic in Oakley on Friday, August 14th, from 4-7pm the evening before the event, where over ten of the best delta pros will be on hand to give ANYONE in attendance valuable one-on-one instruction on how to successfully fish the delta.
Some of the Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour pro support staff on duty Friday evening will be:
Dee Thomas – Inventor of the Flippin’ technique and Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame inductee, sharing some of the secrets about the delta it took him a lifetime to learn.
