Default "Delta Swing" events make/break Classic dreams

BETHEL ISLAND, Ca – Future Pro Tour anglers will converge in mass at Russo’s Marina this coming Saturday as they prepare in earnest, for the first in a series of events to be held on the massive California delta.

And it is a good bet that those teams with even the slightest hopes of competing in the prestigious 2009 Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour Classic championship, to be held in just three short months, will be fully aware that now is not the time to employ a conservative approach to fishing in this first event dubbed “Rollin on the River”.

“I been fishing this waterway for a lot of years and know it pretty well”, noted FPT angler Harvey Pulliam who considers the California Delta his home waters. But one thing I have learned over the years of fishing it is that you should NEVER underestimate its ability to quickly take you from a hero to a zero”, he said candidly. On the delta nothing is for certain…and you just have to go out there, follow your instincts, and commit yourself to fishing hard all day long”.

And as warm but stable conditions are forecast for the Saturday (northern region) and Sunday (central region) events, most members of the Future Pro Tour’s pro-support staff such as Ranger pro Ken Mah concur with a more aggressive fishing strategy. “Go for the big bites early, and try to get the big fish – those that feed primarily in the early morning hours, to go for your top water offerings before sun is fully up as you will need some good “anchor” fish to bring a decent limit to the scales”.

One variable that all competitors must deal with is the tidal factor, as FPT venues thus far, have been held on various lakes throughout northern and central California, which outside of the falling water conditions brought on by the various regulating water resource agencies, basically fish the same from day to day.

But not so with the California delta.

This maze of sloughs and levies meander throughout the San Joaquin Valley producing over 1000 miles of shoreline, with tides that undulate multiple times within a 24 hour period creating a challenge that will test the resolve of even the best of anglers.

But Future Pro Tour anglers are never left without a way to receive the help they need in their quests to become true students of the game. And in keeping with its manta: “A Great Place to Learn”, the Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour will host its traditional – and optional, pre-registration seminar/clinic in Oakley on Friday, August 14th, from 4-7pm the evening before the event, where over ten of the best delta pros will be on hand to give ANYONE in attendance valuable one-on-one instruction on how to successfully fish the delta.

Some of the Thunder Valley Outdoors/Future Pro Tour pro support staff on duty Friday evening will be:

Dee Thomas – Inventor of the Flippin’ technique and Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame inductee, sharing some of the secrets about the delta it took him a lifetime to learn.

Bobby Barrack – “The Frogmaster” guides over 250 days a year on the California delta. Although multi-talented in all facets of his game, Bobby’s specialty is working Snag Proof Frog baits over grass and “cheese” during the summer months. You need to hear what this man has to say about summertime frog fishing!

Justin Lucas - FLW Touring pro, and FPT graduate who has won four FLW Stren Series titles, will help you with selecting the proper rods, reels and line applications for effectively fishing the California Delta.

Andy “Cooch” Cuccia - A delta guide and outstanding instructor with an uncanny talent for bringing relevancy to seemingly complicated fishing principles, Andy is the master at fishing “Big Jigs” on the California delta.

Mark Fong – Outstanding “Finesse” fisherman who will show you how to apply effective drop-shottin’ techniques used on lakes to catch fish on the delta.

Leroy Bertolero – A perennial favorite in delta competition, who has enjoyed tremendous success throwing topwater baits on the delta in the summertime, will help you with understand what top water baits work best on the delta.

Ken Mah – Outstanding Ranger pro, with many top finishes in FLW competition, will cover the new “Punching” technique that works for bass that reside in heavy cover during the hot summer months.

Mark Lassange – Fantastic delta fisherman that specializes in shallow running crankbaits. Mark will show you how to target active fish in “skinny water”.

Charley Almassey – Top ten finisher in multiple FLW National Guard/Stren Series events on the delta, will help you understand how delta tidal flows effect fish, and how to “run the tides” to be successful during competition.

Tony Franceschi – Providing expert advice on throwing reaction baits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits during the summertime months.

Jeff Huth – Ranger Pro that will help you understand the dynamics of team fishing, strategies, time management, and putting together an effective game plan.

In addition, the NAVIONICS factory representatives will be on site to assist you with any electronic mapping questions you may have, and help you configure/re-configure your unit for the next days competition!

This seminar/clinic is open to EVERYONE, even if you do not fish FPT events, and there will be FREE food and drinks for all in attendance, PLUS a FREE raffle for premium products such as a Minn Kota multi-bank battery charger, Costa Del Mar sunglasses, a REVO reel, NAVIONICS HotMaps Explorer DVDs and much more!

If you have not already pre-signed, you can sign up the morning of the event at Russo’s Marina beginning at 4:00 am, where we will have free pastries and fresh coffee for you to enjoy. Limited membership fees of just $5 per angler will be available for those of you that want to tryout the FPT or will only be able to fish this event, and our staff will stationed at the Russo’s Marina boat dock to service those of you that will be boating over from other launch ramps.

So come on out and join us for “Rollin on the River” and the afternoon weigh-in which will start at 1:00pm at Russo’s Marina. Come listen to some music, eat some delicious BBQ, and watch the best amateur anglers in the west put it all on the line for what is sure to be a spectacular showdown and a very fun event.

Don’t forget…this event will be televised and broadcast on Comcast Sports Net California…so get your hair cut, and sponsor shirts pressed as SHOWTIME comes to the delta!

See you all there!
