No, not religion.
When I was a kid I used to fish a lake with my dad and brothers. It was called Roemhildt Lake in Southern Minnesota. It held great numbers of bass and a few Northern Pike. It was the smallest yet deepest lake in the area. It was at least 60 ft deep and every shore had lily pads from zero to 16 feet deep. Bass Paradise! It was spring fed and crystal clear to 15 feet deep
It was a private lake, but Dad sweet talked a farmer into letting Dad take his kids down there. The farmer had a soft spot for and for free, let us use his three family owned oar powered wooden boats.
Back then we'd never heard of rubber worms. We were strictly crank bait fishermen. A good afternoon was 3 to 5 bass apiece. We knew the bass hung out under the pads but had no way to get to them. all we could do is throw cranks along the edges.
However, there was this one day.....
I'd been to the local Coast to Coast hardware store in Amboy, MN and looked in the bargain bin and saw a lure I liked for 19 cents. I bought it. It resembled a skunk. It was a one piece all black deep diver with a single white stripe down the back.
I took it on the family outing to Roemhildt Lake. Fish attacked it as soon as it hit the water. I was the only one catching fish. I was putting on a show. When I had 10 in the boat I handed it to my net boy, brother Mike. He caught 5 or 6. I took it back and got it tangled in the line and all wound up. I gave it a jerk. As it was just about to hit the surface a bass came out of water and nailed it. We about rolled on the floor laughing.
The last two years I've gone home Mike and I talk about that lure and laugh our butts off. I spent a few hours last year on the forums drawing photos of it, trying to see if with other fisherman's help, I could find it on eBay. I finally thought it was a Bagley Smoo but after buying several I realized it wasn't. I thought it was nothing but a fond memory.
Today my brother called me. He asked, “Guess what I found today?” Of course I had no Idea. He said, “I was looking through some old tackle boxes in the garage and I came across an original skunk lure.”
I yelled, “NO EFFIN WAY!”
I asked, “What is the name of it”
He said, “All it says is Hi-Sport.”
I typed in Hi Sport lure in eBay search. There is was, third one down. $8 buy it now. No hesitation, I grabbed it. He said, “No, don’t buy it, I’ll send you this one.”
I said, “Bought it, to late.”
He said, “I’m sending it anyway, it yours.”
Now, its butt ugly, but I’m going to fish it anyway. I’m remembering it had good action. On eBay its described as “The Hi-Sport Surfing Minnow - The Minnow on a Surf Board.” Funny stuff.
Wish me luck
