I have one. I've only had the boat out once since I installed it, but I stayed on the water for 12+ hours and the battery meter on my trolling motor dipped to 3 (out of 4) late in the day. By the time I was done running back to the launch they were back up to four.

The way I see it, if nothing else, the alternator charger will keep the batteries from running to absolute zero (like I used to do) and will extend the life of the batteries.

My understanding is you should recharge deep cell batteries as soon as possible after each use and at the lowest possible amperage. If you are using an on board alternator charger, will that charge the batteries up too fast at a high amperage?

I'll call my buddy at Minn Kota and get the skinny.

If you had the "all charge" and the "stay and charge" you would never have to plug your boat in...... unless you lived on the lake

I called a very knowledgeable guy at Minn Kota - Dave Marquette. He said the old philosophy in charging batteries was to trickle charge them. The new philosophy is charge them quickly as it keeps the sulfates from forming on the plates.

Their running charger that diverts the charge to the trolling batteries runs at max 10 amps per hour, however their regular chargers charge at 5 - 10 and 15 amps per hour. He said their chargers can't charge gel batteries.
