Default I'm a Texas Guy!!!

Hi guys and gals,

So why would a guy from Texas join a Cal fishing forum?

Because its in Cal were tactics like swim baits and drop shoting got introduce to the U.S.

I want to stay on top of the Bass world so I thought I better be watching where all the new stuff comes in.

And I hope that maybe I can show you a few tricks from the other land of the giants.

Tight Lines

Welcome to Calbasin,

Your post on Swimbaits and Dropshots remind me of my second club tournament with SOCB.

It was 99' and I was new to fishing, I cought a few bank fishing but I was green as green can be and everything I was taught about fishing was to be quiet dont spook the fish. Split shotting was the deal in SoCal at the time and finesse fishing was king.

So i draw this guy Gerry Mahu who was THE stick of the club, so I was stoked I meet him at Castaic and he pulls up in "The Brown Boat" which was an aluminum center console bay boat with a home made plywood flippin deck and a milk crate for bait storage. I was like really, this guy is the clubs hot stick....but I am excited it was pouring down rain and I was in my kmart special vinyl raingear we take off around the lake and pull up to our first spot, before I could untangle my Ugly Stick split shot this guy was in the front of the boat tossin this HUGE plug - KABOOSH, KABOOSH...I remember thinking to myself Oh great now I know this guy is nuts he just scared all of the fish out of this cove and I havnt gotten my worm wet yet. Next thing I know he picks up a spinning rod with the weight on the bottom, NOW I AM CONVINCED he is certifiable I mean he has the weight on the bottom and the hook on top throwing this little 4" worm.

Before I can finish my thought he hooks up, Dude fish get the net, its a TOAD. I standby him and proceed to net a 12.12 Laregmouth bass, the biggest fish I have ever seen and we both start hootin and hollerin to be heard across the lake. Hugs go around and I am pumped from there.

I find out later that his bait was one of Huddelstons prototypes that he found at the bottom of castaic, and the lil worm he cought his fish on was a drop shot 4" roboworm. I will never forget that day.

Thanks for the memory and welcome to the wild wild west
