Lews reels. Never heard of them until this year. There seem to be a big push in the market.

Lew's (Lew Childre) BB-1 speed spool low profile casting reel that revolutionized bass fishing reels back in the early 70's. Bait casting reels before Lew's were round. Old name with a new speed spool reel.

Shimano and Daiwa paid royalties to Childre for his patent on the low profile reel design until 1990. Then the design became public domain and all the casting reel mfr's offered the design. My guess is someone bought the name "Lew's Speed Spool" and is marketing a new reel with todays technology.
Good luck with your tournament bass fishing, it wouldn't hurt you to become a tackle tester.

Good history lesson tom, so they pioneered the design. I'll have to check one out. It would be interesting to find out where they stand with todays major brands.
Thanks
