FLW Tour Lake Norman
This tournament started off with a decision I made before ever really getting on the lake. I knew the lake had spots and largemouth. I knew to win the tournament you might need to catch largemouth but I believed I could catch good limit of spots so I concentrated on finding and figuring out how to catch 2lbers.
The baits I used were a Berkeley Hollow Belly, a Jackall Squad Minnow, and a Jackall Flick Shake.
The first day of the tournament I only caught 5 keepers. The bite was tough for me due to the absolutely perfect weather. My bite was better when the weather was a little nasty. I caught 1 fish on a swimbait and the others on the flick shake all around docks. The fish were all good fish and I weighed a limit of 10-1.
The second day the cloud cover came in and the wind picked up and I was able to throw the hollow belly and the jerkbait all day. I caught the fish around docks and was able to pinpoint an offshore irregularity where I found a large concentration of fish that helped me weigh in 11-04. All spotted bass, catching around 20 keepers. This solid limit helped me move up from 51st to 32nd and got me really excited about the possibility of catching another limit on my offshore spot.
The third day the weather was bad again with winds, rain, and cloud cover. I went to my offshore structure and there was an angler already on it. My main bite was an afternoon deal anyway so I conceded the water and went to my back up area. Fishing was slow but I caught a limit by 10 and was feeling confident I could upgrade at my other spot. Once I got there I caught 20 keepers and culled every single fish of my original limit. The final day I caught most of my fish on the Berkeley hollow belly just slow rolling the bait down at 20-30 feet. When the fish got accustomed to it, I picked up my flick shake worm and was able to catch my kicker fish a fat 2 3/4 oz spot. My last day limit weighed 11-05. That day I left 40 minutes early for my weigh in but my heart sank when my boat wouldn't turn over. For a moment I freaked out until my co-angler calmed me down and suggested we just swap my trolling motor battery over since we would no longer need it. Thank god. I ended up arriving back with 15 minutes to spare.
My total weight was 32-10 and ended up in 15th place. I am still super excited with my finish and the way I fished the tournament.
I'm currently at Fort Loudon/Tellico Lakes right now getting in a few days practice before it becomes off limits. Keep checking back as I'll trying to become a little better updating my blog sooner.
