Default Mounting the Transducer

Alright guys, the wife bought me a 998 for xmas and I am finding time to attach it to the boat (now that the kitchen remodel is over). I have been online looking at photos of transducer locations and want your guys advice. I run a Triton and like the idea of mounting it on the "step" where the plug, etc.....is. I will be honest I have opened the box, drooled , then put it back, never opening one piece of literature. Will I get any problems with my side viewing? Any good links/advice for a former lowrance guy to help get me started? What do you think about the new 596c hd di for the front? Thanks for the new forum,
Terry

Hi Terry, You will love that unit. I have a 997SI upfront (for now).

I have a Tr-20 myself. Here is what you are up against. I would advise against mounting it on the plug step. Couple of reasons why.

1. that ducer is $200 bucks if you hit something
2. If you do hit something its going to ram the ducer right into the top of your boat and I'm not sure what will give first.
3. Most people don't get high speed readings with their HDSI ducer so having said that I would mount the ducer on the actual transom or off the jackplate if you have one. This is how I have mine mounted. Just make sure you mount it in a place where you can still use your transom tie downs like someone I know didn't

If High speed readings are important to you I would get a bilge ducer and connect it via a simple Y cable

Here are the parts you need
http://store.humminbird.com/products/313995/XP_9_20
http://store.humminbird.com/products/322954/AS_SIDB_Y

When you hook this cable up what this does is disables the SONAR part in your big HDSI ducer that came with your unit and goes strictly through the bilge ducer. YOu still get SI and DI out of that transom ducer..

Hope this didn't confuse ya.

Mike

Default Re: Mounting the Transducer

Like Mike I like to mount higher for protecting the HDSI Transducer. If you have a Jackplate another option would be to mount off of it. I use a product from www.transducershieldandsaver.com that not on mounts but also some additional protection. He builds custom mounts for jackplate installs.

Like mentioned anytime you mount above the bottom of the hull to get 2D readings on plane you will need a 2D transducer and Y Cable.

Transducer: XP 9 20
YCable: AS SI DB Y
