Default LMS 520c

having trouble now with unit turning itself off; rumor has it that Lowrance will upgrade to a newer unit with return of this(bought it used) and some $. Is this true and how do I go about it? I've also heard this is a common problem with this model; true? Thanx in advance.....

Which unit are you referring to? When does it shut off, when you start the motor or just anytime?

The answer to your questions is: model# on the box is LMS520c, and it shuts off when the big motor is started, when ever it wants to, no rhyme or reason, no pattern to shutting off, turn it on while idling along and watch it load across the bottom of the screen then shuts off.......... very frustrating. Brand new cranking battery did not change a thing.

Since a new battery didn't help I would check all the wiring connections. If you have a loose wire nut or a loose or corroded spade connector a bumpy ride, water getting on the wiring or other movements in the boat can create an intermittent problem.

Just last week I was in a boat with a similar problem as you are describing. When I climbed under the console I found a ground wire that was extended to reach the spade connector. Someone just twisted the two wires together to make the extension. This was loose when I checked it and was making contact sometimes and not at other times. I installed a butt connector where the two wires were twisted together and the customer has not had a problem since.
