Default Drop Shot Setups

I know this is one of your favorite rigs, and I'm curious about your method of rigging (type of hook, weight, knot used etc. I'm also curious if you ever do this with a baitcaster and bigger baits. Thanks!

Thanks FishEyeBass for the question.

When drop shotting I base my decision on the setup by the area I am fishing. I fish so many different setups it would be tough to break them all down here. In order to keep it simple Iíll break it down to two setups a shallow structure setup and a deep open water setup. There are many variations in between, but Iíll cover those two setups for now.

Shallow structure
On the Elite Tour we end up fishing shallow structure a lot more often than we do deeper water. I will go with a heavier line as much as 12, 14 all the way up to 20-pound Sunline Sniper, with a ľ to 3/8 ounce tungsten weight and a 5/0 Gamakatsu hook with a 7Ē Roboworm. This is a great setup for fishing the grass lines in the summer. For this setup I do use a baitcaster reel and a Megabass Orochi F6-68XR or a Megabass Orochi F6-72X4 rod for the hairy stuff.

Deep Open Water
For deeper open water Iíll fish lighter line, 7-pound Sniper from Sunline. I find that the 7-pound is a great line itís as strong as 8-pound line, but with the same properties of 6-pound line. I have caught a lot of big fish with that line. Iíve even bounced 4-pounders in the boat with it. Itís great for casting. Iíll use ľ ounce to 3/8 ounce weight again and depending on the bait Iíll switch hooks up from 1/0 down to a smaller nose hook style hook. For this technique Iíll use a spinning reel and a Megabass F3-610DGS Aaron Martens Limited Rod.

One misconception is matching the line size to the color of the water. Instead I base line size strictly on the cover/structure I am fishing. Also, for both applications I will often use the Sunline Braid with a Sniper leader. The Sunline Braid allows me to get longer casts with less effort. For the Braid to Flouro knot I use either an Albright knot or a Uni-to-Uni knot depending on the line diameters.

Give that 7-pound Sniper a try, I think you'll like it out there in California.

Best of luck,

The real question is do you tie the Double uni knot to the dshot hook on the floro?
