I don't want to sound like a jackass but use the right bait for the depth you are fishing. It sounds like you are not sure on the depth of the pond you are fishing . If you don't know start with the deepest you have like a DD22 and go from there . As far as the rod it is trial and error . Of course I should tell you to buy a new Dobyns cranking rod but I'm not . The way I learned was to use what I had and learn what you need out of your rod like length , more back bone , longer handle , more tip . You tell us what you need and then all these fools on hear can help. My suggestion is a 7ft6in macabee cb rod but fish your rod first answer what you need you may not want the extra length .
