1st question: Braid with Flouro leader vs. straight Flouro for drop shotting?

Mike,

What are your thoughts on using Braid with Flouro leader vs. straight Flouro for drop shotting? Also, would you use a swivel on a drop shot rig?

Thanks,
Bryan Vogt

Great question Bryan. I have been experimenting for the last 6 months with using a union knot marrying braid to flouro and building my confidence in the knot strength. So far I have not had any breakage at the knot regardless of how big the fish has been or the rock on the bottom of the lake. The knot is holding up just fine. You have to be very careful to tie the knot correctly and wet the knot when you cinch the two together. The advantage is it increases your feeling and there is a big saving in line costs. You may only have to change your braid once a year. When using braid married to flouro, you do not need to use a swivel because the braid does not twist.

If you use straight flouro, I do not personally use a swivel. When spooling flouro, I always have the line come off the bottom of the spool. I make sure that the plastic I am using tracks straight, this will decrease the line twist. Also, after a few days if you start to develop line twist, you can cut your bait off and drag your line behind the boat to remove twists. That is usually good for another half day.
