Re: Canyon Plastics is featuring a great deal for Skin N Bones!

I am not upset about anything. Hey I am all for offering great deals to customers. I am all for free enterprise. I am all for new ideas. But I think the damage being done to manufacturers may be a lot larger than at first sight.

If a company wants to sell his products for less than typical wholesale they'd be best to offer it to the retailers they have and not to one of their competitors who really can't do much for them the other 350+ days a year. Even if the daily deal was the same company 15-20-50 times a year, the profit in it won't touch the loss in sales to the other retailers. It's much like and actually worse than a manufacturer selling direct.

It's a really sketchy business model for the manufacturer's not for the new website. I appreciate the forward thinking and concept behind the site - but, when it was brought to me many months ago as something Steve Reed wanted to do - I laid this out to him, as I am now and he got it.

Let's think of it in another industry to hopefully see it in a 3rd party.

Toyota of Your Hometown is selling Toyota's and the regular prices offered by the other 5000 Toyota dealers across the country. Toyota decides they want to help out Joe Bob down the road - so they sell him 3 Toyotas at half of what they sell the Toyota's to their dealers for. Joe Bob sells the Toyota's for less than what the Toyota dealers themselves can buy them for... How many dealers do you think are going to continue to buy Toyota's?

To take it up an even higher notch - Then go to a place where the same retailers PAY to advertise and post free advertisements on it. I am not sure which of the following sites and stores

Tackle It
Phils Props
Clear Lake Outdoors
Monster Fishing Tackle
Walton's Pond
Swimbait City
Hook Line and Sinker
Coyote Bait and Tackle
Clear Lake Bait and Tackle
Great Outdoors
Mel Cotton's

carry products from Hippo, Powell, Canyon Plastics and whatever manufacturer is next: but, I am sure if they do they'd be a bit upset if let a "poached" advertisement go on this site where they pay to advertise. If they want the exposure the price, last time I checked was SUPER fair and actually very cheap for the value.

Real world scenario: I know I have a meeting tomorrow where I was scheduled to discuss a Canyon Plastics order, including a new product I had Jay of Canyon Plastics build for us. I was 100% sure we were going to pull the trigger on that deal - now I am 50% sure I'll get it pulled... and if the trigger is pulled, Skin and Bones won't be in the order.

Just my .02

do you get upset if a company offers extremely low prices at a show?

I agree 100% with Tom. Every company who participates in this site is taking a chance of retailers avoiding doing business with them. They are selling to the public for less than the retailer can buy the product. It doesn't make good business sense. Any manufacturer should be protecting their retailers, not getting into price wars with them.

Great deal for sure - but, it makes it really hard for a tackle shop to bring in a company like Canyon Plastic's products when they are doing deals like that!
