18 to 20 , youguys are full of it. 14 foot max. That is all the deep you need to go anyways.

Keep your rod tip down near the water or in the water if you want the crank bait to dive a little deeper. The faster you reel the shallower the lure will dive; you need to find the right retreive speed for each crankbait.
Making bottom contact may not be what triggers a crank bait strike. Change of direction created by a change of pace is usually the key factor. Try reeling using different cranking sequences; 2 turns, pause, 3 turns pause, rod sweep, 3 turns, 2 turns pause...etc..etc.. to make the lure movement erractic.
Don't believe the depth range marketed on the lure package; it's nearly impossible to get any crankbait to dive to 15 feet by casting and retrieving it, unless the sinks on it's own or you put the rod half the length under water. DD14 runs about 8 to 10 feet, DD22 about 12 to 15 feet on a 90-100 foot cast. If the lure is trolled it may reach it's max advertised depth range.

Funny. I have an 804cb. Love it to death and yes it will handle a dd22 just fine . I went to that rod because of my fish hooked / lost ratio. At 53 years of age I have used a bunch of equipment over the years, Keep the rod and fish the baits. Crankbait fishing is all about angles IMHO.

I agree with Bassman on this topic. Before you take peoples words for it try out stuff and fish with what you got. When I first started cranking I used a 7ft MH graphite rod. worked very good for everything to DD22s. Lost too many big fish on it so I knew to try the same rod but in fiberglass and stopped losing fish.

People will tell you the Dobyns crank rods, powells, lamiglas and loomis... they all work and feel different.

Now days the composite rods are very popular...but I personally love the feel in straight fiberglass and LOVE the LONG 7'6" rods.

First off....get good and confident in fishing cranks with the current tackle you have and then start making adjustments with that knowledge.

Trial and error has always been best for me. Everyone I talk to loves the MacAbee Dobyns rods, but for ME its not the feel i like...but i won't knock any products out there...they are all good and work great.

You can try a Little N by Norman. These baits actually sink - especially if you upsize the hooks a bit. So you can cast out - count down - and start crankin. Should be able to get 13-15 ft without much trouble.

Re: Crankbait Tips.......????

I don't want to sound like a jackass but use the right bait for the depth you are fishing. It sounds like you are not sure on the depth of the pond you are fishing . If you don't know start with the deepest you have like a DD22 and go from there . As far as the rod it is trial and error . Of course I should tell you to buy a new Dobyns cranking rod but I'm not . The way I learned was to use what I had and learn what you need out of your rod like length , more back bone , longer handle , more tip . You tell us what you need and then all these fools on hear can help. My suggestion is a 7ft6in macabee cb rod but fish your rod first answer what you need you may not want the extra length .
