Lead in fishing lures From Congressman Rradanovich Dear Mr. HILL: Thank you for writing to express your thoughts on the petition to ban the use of lead in fishing tackle that is currently under consideration by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is a pleasure to hear from you. As you may know, on August 3, 2010, the American Bird Conservancy, the Association of Avian Veterinarians and a number of other organizations, submitted a petition to the EPA, asking them to "prohibit the manufacture, processing and distribution in commerce of lead for shot, bullets and fishing sinkers." On August 27, 2010, the EPA rejected the portion of the petition pertaining to shot and bullets, stating that they did not have the jurisdiction to regulate this type of product. The portion of the petition pertaining to fishing sinkers was left open for public comment until September 15, 2010. As of now, the EPA has not issued a decision on whether or not to ban lead in fishing sinkers. As the representative from the 19th District of California, an area that contains many acres of national park land, I understand the importance of preserving the ecological health of California's natural water ways and marine wildlife. A great number of my constituents enjoy fishing and hope to be able to continue this hobby for years to come. However, I also believe that fishing regulation should continue to be administered by the states and local agencies who best understand the affects of certain substances on the state's wildlife and natural resources. The intent of the proposed ban is to reduce the number of bird deaths caused by lead ingestion. However, a study by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service determined that less than 1 percent of waterfowl and other birds, including eagles, are killed by ingesting lead. Additionally, while the proposed ban claims that the cost of producing fishing sinker without lead would be minimally increased, the truth is that cost would likely be raised upwards of 15 times the current cost, depending on the substituted metals. So, the likely result of the proposed ban is a dramatic increase in costs to fishermen, with little to no decrease in waterfowl deaths. Thank you again for your thoughts on this proposed ban. Rest assured that I will continue to monitor the status of this petition and keep your thoughts in mind if this issue ever reaches the House of Representatives. chrishouse2011	Re: EPA vrs. Lead in fishing lures I emailed the epa about the lead band and from what they tell me they are trying to ban just sinkers. Supposedly its becuase the birds are picking them up and trying to digest them. I agree if a national lead ban passed banning all lead products for fishing it would kill the whole entire industry.

Lead in fishing lures this got to be a biggee in Minnesota, said the loons were dropping like flies, funny thing happened Fish and Game did a major study and found the loon population is growing by leaps and bounds. no science to back this crap up so they keep spewing the same crapola until it starts to stick. Start emailing your senators and congressmen and let them know how u feel

How many kids are going to be taught to fish when dad simply can't afford tackle. How much does Tin cost and how available is it? I know it's not as dense therefore your baits will be bigger for the same weight but is it even available in the amounts it would take to replace lead?

AC	Re: EPA vrs. Lead in fishing lures I sent along emails to all of my local reps and got a response back from all of them in a short period of time. Some said they would look into it more and a couple actually tried to get into with me about how lead is detrimental to birds and wildlife. A few also told me how they support the ban. These research groups are in the pockets of enviromental nutjobs and I dont know what I can do in my local area to change their minds. The politicians around here will side with the interest groups that are in the pockets of the Sierra club and Peta and really dont seem to care about the sportsman in my area. They claim hundreds of thousands of birds are killed each year due to lead. What else can I do? I am out numbered big time in Marin/the bay area??? If this passes its going to hurt a lot of people, putting small bait makers out of business and increasing the cost of a sport that can already be expensive...

I understand that vendors are up in arms. i paint most these vendors products, such as lim it, jig monster, pepper jigs, ganns, and i belive hook line and sinker but thats not the point. This ban would destroy where these companies get there products made. I work for the place that manufactures these. This ban would cripple this industry and really f*** up our economy even more. who wants to spend at least $15 on a jig or spinnerbait? Its absolutely rediculous. I spent time on the epa site trying to find reports about this ban but i had no look. i sent an email off and hopefully i can figure what evidence they really have. so far all the evidence i can find has fishing and hunting connected. Its focused mostly towards hunting.

Lead in fishing lures [b]The lead controversy has hit the plumbing industry very hard.........faucets & anything that conveys potable water now has to have 0.25% or less, lead content.......... so now we have new products with "plastic" and the like to convey the water.... not without a cost increase of up to 35%...... .. now wait a minute, plastic replacing brass increasing the product's cost.. thats ...... not to mention that now it looks as if lead in fishing products may be coming under the same stupid category....... again .... so, do fish drink water???????? are we now reducing lead for their benefit ? ..... looks to me as if "someone" may have a major stake in the plastics industry and they have started with plumbing and are now moving on to bigger things ...... whats next......... plastic fishing tackle ......right....... . again I've stepped in it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm eagerly awaiting the bashing........... so in closing, I think I'll just BURP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Catch 'em while you can........ RDP

JIGS	EPA vrs. Lead in fishing lures Guys, what are we going to do, or can we do about this EPA lead issue that a lot of my vendors are up in arms about. I am getting emails daily about this. There goes the little guy jig , drop shot, darthead, Shakey baits, buzzbaits and spinnerbait makers ! Boy will the price go up now !!! Kind of hard to pour Tungsten !!! On August 23, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was petitioned by the Center for Biological Diversity and four other organizations to ban all lead in fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This includes sinkers, jigs, weighted fly line, and components that contain lead such as brass and ballast in a wide variety of lures, including spinner blades, stick baits and more. A lead ban would significantly add to the cost of fishing tackle. Alternative materials cost from 6 to 15 times more than lead. The EPA has opened the petition for public comment.
