THAT IS A BIG PROBLEM LOOKING AT THE GPS SCREEN ESPECIALLY ON FOGGY MORNINGS. THATS WHY ONE GUY DRIVES AND THE OTHER GUY CO PILOTS EVEN WHEN ITS CLEAR. LOTS OF COMMON SENSE.

Re: BOATS COLLIDE AT CASITAS

i was almost killed in a bassboat during a BFL event on lake ontario when my boater was watching his GPS, and not where he was going... came within 30ft of a 40ft cruiser at 60mph+

as cool as it is having a jumbo HDS screen at ur console, keep ur eyes on the horizon and not the waypoints ur hoping to fish

Bingo poolboy...exactly it. Responsibility of ourselves and the parents letting their kids drive boats. Shoot, I didn't get to operate a bass boat until I was able to prove to my dad that I was fully capable and knew the basics to boating and safety. My dad did it right...just like he didn't let me tow the rig to the lake until I could prove in a parking lot that i could tow properly.

its not about pointing fingers at anyone in particular guys. be smart, pay attention and be responsible.

heaven forbid the govn get ahold of our boating rights.... you see what they are doing to the country we live in as we speak.

Re: BOATS COLLIDE AT CASITAS

the last thing we need is the government to tell us how to do anything. It's obvious they don't know didly sheet about nothin..
It's about personal responsibility as a parent and a person. This sounds like a trajic accident that was a result of somebody not paying attention at the wheel of a boat.
Just pay attention, look out for the other guy.

Some boaters will always have that excuse they did now know about boating laws until California gets their act together and finally pass this bill that has been in the planning stage for more than 3 years:

California (Adjourns Aug. 31)
No comprehensive boater education requirement.
Legislation to require that operators of recreational vessels propelled by engines pass a one-time, State-approved test will be heard by Assembly Transportation Committee on April 14. The bill has the support of many organizations and the lead California organization is the Recreational Boaters of California. (A.B. 2110/Duvall)

Right now as it is, anyone can walk into a new boat showroom, and without any training, knowledge of boating laws, or boater safety training, purchase a motor driven vessel not requiring a commercial license to operate, and take that vessel to any body of water, and operate it legally.

That is scarey...

Common sense tells me all vessel operators, regardless if they are gas/electric motor driven... sail driven... paddled... etc., should be required to take a certified boater safety course, pass it, and receive their certificate (license) before operating on any body of water within California. There should be no excuse not knowing boating laws before operating any vessel.

There are many PWC users unaware it is illegal to operate any PWC, even if it has navigational lights, after sunset, or before sunrise on California waterways per the California Boating Law. I've seen them in use after dark on several occasions.

I agree with you Tom . I do think that there is a need for boat driving courses . It is to easy for someone to drive a boat. My dad gave me the keys to are Dimarko flat bottom that had a blown 468 and a two speed at 14 years old . That wasn't very smart on his part but I loved it. That kind of poor judgement happens all the time on are lakes . That being said I still think the bass guys are some of the safest on the water . I know some can't drive to save their a$$ but for the most part they can drive. I hear of bassboats in accidents all the time but that is a numbers deal . There are bassboats out there all the time . Maybe we should all take a few classes every few years just to keep us sharp .

Re: BOATS COLLIDE AT CASITAS

I only fish a few charity events anymore and stay off our local lakes during the weekends.
The majority of weekend boaters have few boating skills. This includes the local tournament bass clubs who believe they own the lake. My boat is faster then yours and I can out run you to whatever spot you intend to fish...speed seems to be important, not the fishing skills.
I spent my youth racing very fast boats that ran over 150 mph and fuel drags over 200 mph...at sanctioned races. I have owned 70+mph bass boats over the years, rarely run at that full speed unless fishing the big river lakes.
Skill matters; the skill to how and when to run at full throttle and when to fish slow.
The old man, who isn't much older than I am, wasn't in anyone's way when he was center punched by a boat that wasn't watching where it was going.
No one said bass anglers are any more or less reckless on the water than other boat drivers. Remember; just because you are fishing from a bass boat doesn't give you any special rights on public water, respect others on the water.

Re: BOATS COLLIDE AT CASITAS

I second that bassman. I am not saying it was the rental boat or the bassboats fault but I was on Casitas yesterday and had a rental boat run by me at no more than 20 feet away. All I could do was shake my head in disbelief. Also had a pontoon rental run between me and the bank, I couldn't believe it, and I was only 40 yards or so off the bank.
The guys at the rental shop should give these guys a few courtesy rules before handing them the life jackets.
